Hi all, I was wondering whether or not the effects of pot on the brain can intefere with the effects of the epilepsy medicine Tegretol 400mg per day. I know grapefruit and alcohol have adverse effects on the drug's treatments and can lead to uncontrollabe seizure possibilities in some cases. However, in the case of weed I do not not if it does have any interference or not. So if anyone could help me here I would appreciate it. Thanks.Chris

If 6-people can get marijuana/medicine from the federal government why can't we get the same medicine if we all are created equal??
IRV ROSENFELD (Florida Resident) gets 300 joints a month and has been for over 20 years. Go to youtube and watch the videos of Irv smoking where ever he wants and he will never get arrested.
It's not right that I have to go to the blackmarket to get my medicine and the federal government gives medicine to a small group of people. Big Pharma got the first Pres. Bush to stop the program because it was cutting into their profits. GROW YOUR OWN MEDICINE!!! SCREW BIG PHARMA!!!
Irvin has a site in construction finnaly, http://www.potluckrx.com/
great guy.
300 joints a month???? wow I don't think I could burn 300 in a month no way. Must be some real crappy goverment weed . he should really invest in a vape he he he he
Anyway I agree with ya . isn't it a bitch to be treated like a criminal?? Hopefully this fall we will pass med MJ and I will grow my own meds. My doc was a bit peeved at me cause I stop taking all his pills. Can you imagine that??
Best thing I can say move to a state with medical MJ. be happy .........x
yes it sucks to have to look out for opo all the time because eeryoe thinks your gonna kill yourself or something

interesting video about hemp oil. If we pass medical mj this fall in michigan might be something to look at.
I strongly support marijuana for epilepsy and if I had my way I go off all AED's and smoke nothing but weed if possible.
I grew up having seizures and tried every drug from the doctor and was stuck with dialantin repeatedly being my body grew up on that one. As I got older and my metabolism changed and my diet, I learned more about the electrical imbalance inside my brain. Also, it was a tumor they finally discovered after 20 years. Anyway no medicine helped, I quit taking all my seizure meds just to know what it was like without a drug in my system. For the calming of my brain I began to smoke marijuana occationally and a low dosage for the relaxation and slowing the electrical energies. It still is a disabling drug just as the other pills are and it does have the side effect to the lungs. But it is much more calming and I can and know the effects it is doing to me rather than wondering if this is the drug doing this to my mind or is it the defect in my brain chemistry causing how I feel on a constant basis vs smoking mj is only temporary changes. With drug therapy, my teeth are ruined, my bones are damaged from the injuries of the seizure and side effect of the meds weaking my bone strength, also the skin rashes and the chemical imbalance from the drugs disrupting the sensory of feeling things emotionaly and physically- I can feel things now after quitting the drugs. Everything that effects the nervous system has been damaging for me. Marijuana helps because its like a self help getaway from the world that spins in my head. Also what has helped is quit eating sugar and no caffeine! I eat honey and fruit which is much sweeter now after quitting the processed sugars! and i do still eat things with low amount of sugar like some cereals and bread. No caffeine because it intensifies the nerve pattern and causes irritation to the nervous system.
http://www.phoenixtearsmovie.com/ It still is a disabling drug just as the other pills are and it does have the side effect to the lungs. Not true at all. its like any other drug you get youst to it. and you dont need to smoke it if you eat it you wont get as hi at all. Wish the best of luck to ya

Im really glad this website is here Im 23 and i just started having seizures recently. I enjoy smoking cannabis and using psylocibin mushrooms and LSD. Now i know that doesn't sound smart, but it is actually very safe. My doctor is very trustworthy and not tied in to bonuses for prescribing so much of a certain type of drug. On my first visit i told him of my affinity for the psychedelic realm and he assured me that these chemicals were not only harmless to me , they have been used without any adverse long term reactions. When taking them however, one was BE RESPONSIBLE. Get as much information about whatever you will ingest. If you like to smoke, smoke out of a vaporizer to reduce the effects of the smoke, This manner of smoking is the safest way due to the 95% reduction in carcinogens. Also you can bake with cannabis butter, this is by far the safest way to consume thc,no smoke, no carcinogens, no negative long term affects. But be careful, too much and youll geek out. It is a totally different experience than smoking.
On a different note ive found that just finding anyway to relax helps also, meditation, hiking, whatever suits you.
I've been reading all the different opinions on smoking weed for Epilepsy, and don't know what to think. I smoked when I was younger, and suggested it to my Neuro, and he looked at me as if I had 3 eyes. I've had no appetite since my E started, and when I was younger and smoked, I did a lot more cooking and eating, and now that I'm on AED's, I have NO appetite. Since my Dr said no, I don't need for it to show up in a blood test and screw up my Disability claim.
The drugs are known for causing addiction in humans. In fact, not only drugs, cigarettes and alcohol are also addictive substances. These are extremely harmful and cause various disorders. There is a need for educating people about ill-effects of drugs and alcohol. http://www.drugrehabscenters.com/
san5684. you need to get your facts straight on cannabis.
yep some people like to tell you how to drive a car when thay never have even drove a car ever. theres alot of people on here that think thay know abought cannabis. it funny how mutch reserch thay think thay have in the usa but since its a, "class 1 drug it CAN'T be studyed at all!!!" it seems that most dont know that. watch the videos on top of the page ASAP!!! unless thay want to suffer frome theas worthless drugs that are worser then the pain.
I was diagnosed with epilepsy almost 1yr ago. I have been a "pot-head" since age 14 (Im 25 now). My smoking pot has helped the pain and control my seizures without meds. I tried the medication thing out and the doc Rx was dilanton 100mg 5xs a day. It made me sick, depressed, easily angered, and best of all liver failure. I was loosing my mind. So I started smoking again and have had no symptoms to date. I am for leagalizing bud for all. It is just like alcohol but with more positive than negative effects. Im sorry if this is kinda hard to follow. I was smoking when I came across this discussion. So ROCK THE HELL ON!!! FELLOW POT SMOKERS!!!<ZZZZZZ0 TELL YOUR CONGRESSMEN 420 LEGAL!!!!
NO MORE PIECES OF MY TONGUE MISSING!!!
J03 Hello, I am so glad that I have come upon this website!!!
My name is Joseph and I am from US California. I have been having night episodes for 4 years. I am now 21 and have been smoking marijuana for about 1 year, and ever since I have noticed nothing but improvments. I have been on a Med called Depakote (divalproex sodium) I am going to have to say F#$k the doctor who prescibed this to me, basically ruined my life. I was taking 125mg tabs 4 times a day. Caused me to be drowsy, unable to think or speak in a understanding manner, and caused me to gain 50 Lbs in 3 months. I would have to say it did stop the episodes but it also stoped me with it. Now with MJ in my life I've never been the same. I'm a new seizure free man. My mind is now able to process information and is now able to help my body show positive emotions (Could never due with all those pills I was given). I say if you are having night seizures try MJ it works for me. I smoke everynight before I go to sleep and wake up feeling good. No more Migranes, sore muscles and NO MORE PIECES OF MY TONGUE MISSING!!!
Hello i`m 20 years old and i`m from Romania. The first seizure was about 4 years ago and for the next 2 years there have been about 3-4 a year one always in September dunno why. The medicine that the doctors prescribed was Topamax 25mg 2 caps a day, a derivate of topiramatum, the drugs reduced the number to 1-2 a year and caused me gastritis and a significant lose in weight (about 10-15 kg), but occasionally when i`m tired i get really edgy and almost feel like collapsing or loosing consciousness or even a small twich in my right arm..., for about 1 year i started smoking MJ in very low doses(0.1 0.2 if smoked alone and never exaggerating, just to keep the every day stress and problems a little away from my head), at first the MJ seemed to be doing worst but then i got a scale and seen that i was smoking about 1-2 grams per joint...(paranoia took over:)) at first in the about first two weeks), after adjusting the dosage and documenting on the subject i began smoking about once or twice a week, the sensations i got when i was tired are no more, since last September i had no more seizures and feeling allot better psychically my food appetite came back and i`m now eating about 6 consistent (spoken to a gym instructor about gaining weight and now i should have been at around 60kilos currently only gained 1kilo in a couple of months)meals a day to compensate for the topamax(doctors orders to take them and i still believe in medics but don't believe the bull$#@$ about MJ).
If subjects are needed for any research on this subject i would gladly volunteer :)).
I am currently on a pause from MJ so i can go get my blood tests and this would be a perfect time to notice any difference and i will come back and let you know about them.
Hope this helps and hope more advanced researches will be made on MJ for its epilepsy purposes.
By the way my Yahoo id is strtz16 if there is anyone interested in discussing about this or any other epilepsy subject...epilepsy is a very bad thing and really brings you down psychically..:( take care
I was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy when I was 13. It was difficult for me to deal with. None of the kids at school picked on me about it...in fact, they were really cool about it...but I still felt as though everyone looked at me as some retarded little girl with no life and no future. My first medication, Depakote, made me gain nearly 90 lbs. in a month, and eventually I was up to 205 lbs. (I was 95 lbs. before starting the medication). I felt horrible! I had never been that depressed in my life, nor that big! I felt disgusting! I was then put on Lamictal. It made me feel sick, and sometimes, I'd even throw up throughout the day. I constantly felt sick! Finally, when I turned 17, I left my parents' house for college. I had never smoked pot before, but figured "screw it! My life is already screwed up...why not just have a little fun?!" (I've never been big into alcohol.) I started smoking pot, and honestly, just stopped taking my meds....not because I thought pot would help me, but because I was sick of feeling sick all the time from my meds, and on top of that, my meds weren't even controlling my seizures (600mg/day of Lamictal). About 7 months later, I was sitting in my dorm room having a conversation with my roommate about my epilepsy, and she asked me how long it had been since I had my last seizure. I sat there and thought for a minute, and it had been about 7 or 8 months...the time I had been smoking marijuana. I figured it was just a coincidence, but when it came to a year without any seizures, and no meds, I started doing research. I asked my neurologist why she thought I hadn't any seizures, and I was very honest with her about what I had been doing. When she found out that I was smoking pot, I thought she was going to flip out on me, but she was very pleased (she just told me not to tell anyone because of the fact that it is illegal). She told me to keep up the good work! I am 21 now, and just recently had my first seizure in 4 years....Why? I had stopped smoking (my boyfriend and I are trying to have a baby) and my new neurologist put me back on Lamictal, now along with Keppra. Now, I'm back to smoking, my boyfriend and I are holding off on having a baby until we have things figured out, and I refuse to take my meds. Marijuana is not as bad as people think it is. I know I'm not addicted to it...I don't fiend for it...if I don't have it for a few days or weeks, I'm fine. Not only that, I don't push myself, I take one or two hits and I'm done and I'm still able to function....I honestly think it depends on your maturity and how you go about smoking it. Marijuana has done a lot for me, unlike any seizure medication has.
http://cannabisculture.com/articles/1404.html will show you(or at least tell you about it and give you info on where to find more about it i think) about babies and cannabis use. about the only diffrence in the babbies that were noticeable were that for the first 30 days they were less fussy and diddnt complaine as much as the non cannabis using mothers babbies. im wem511@gmail.com on AIMessenger if you'd like to talk about it.
J4MY your story is almost exactly like mine. I had my first grand mal seizure (Jeuvinal Myoclonic also)when I was 17 and started the medication trial and error. The Depakote was so bad I stopped takeing it (I felt like a zombie and my hair started falling out) and had a seizure that put me in the hospital. Then came Lamictal and a whole combo of pills with it over the next 7 years. I would go through fazes where I would have a seizure a week. I had somked pot in the past but had stopped before my first seizure. I did not try MJ again until I had surgery a little over a year ago. I smoked up to help control the pain because the pain pills made me too depressed. I noticed that it also helped me sleep at night, something I have never been able to do. So I started to smoke it before bed, then I noticed I was having less seizures. I went from taking max amount of lamictal with Keppra and having at least 3 grandmals a month to being being seizure free for a year! I have been doing so well I no longer take Lamictal and, my Keppra dose is 1/4 of what it originaly was. I take my meds in the morrning and take 3hits at night before I go to bed. My life has completely changed! I dont suffer from being tired all of the time from lack of sleep, I dont have any stupid side effects of medications, and most importantly I dont have seizures General or Myoclonic. The twitching is gone.
I have an interesting testimonial to this one. I live in NY and my freshman year of college I went out to San Francisco Academy of Art. I had never before smoked Marijuana, and had struggled to control seizures since I was 7. For the first time in my life, i hadn't had a seizure in a year...so I took it upon my self to rebel and stop taking my medicine. Taking it was a hassel and restricted my life. At the same time I was becoming a major pot-head (Everyone out there looked at me like i had three heads when i told them I didnt smoke.) I smoked every day and was doing a lot of college drinking. For me alcohol was one of my biggest triggers. Usually the day after drinking a lot I would have a seizure without question. Even with all the drinking, while I was a daily weed smoker, I didnt have a seizure for 8 months. Never in my life had i been able to stop taking my pills and not have a seizure within a day or two! After the 8 months i was not smoking so much because my brother was trying to say i was a drug addict...which to this day i still think is rediculous. In my opinion alcohol is much worse of a substance in its effects (have you ever seen a huge brawl breakout in a room of potsmokers?), and as most of us know, there is a lot of political money involved in drug trade...but I am digressing. I stopped smoking but was socially drinking still and started having seizures again. To this day (7 years later) I only smoke occasionally because doing it every day does make me act like a burnout, and did effect my school work after I changed my major from art to marketing. I cannot stop taking my medication with out having a seizure. Its funny because at the time I had never heard of this remedy, my grandmother told me about it a few years later. I could never explain how i didnt have seizures, but now I know.
no negative effects to my knowledge. marijuana was actually used as a treatment for epilepsy way back when it was just a plant and not a drug. or so i've been told. whatever helps is what i say.
thanks for sharing your stories everyone!
Smoked during college, the magical early twenties when I had no seizures at all. After college I stopped, not because I thought it was bad. I took a state job coming out of school. Pot is like alcohol (and I have strong words for anyone who says otherwise) in the sence it depends on you. You can abuse it or you can use it. Pot may not agree with you, if it doesn't don't use it. Alcohol doesn't agree with me, I don't bash all people and alcohol because of how it effects me. I simply realize thats my experience. If you've never used either and have moral objections, simply stop reading as this is not for you. I started smoking a little again. Why you may ask? Topamax. I completely lost my appetite and 26 pounds. I'm naturally a tiny woman to begin with. How do I feel? I'm eating and putting a little weight back on. I'm becoming myself again. I'm not dizzy anymore. I don't get carsick anymore. I sleep better. I could go on and on about the improvements in my health. AND I FEEL CALM WHEN EPILEPSY DRUGS TAKE CALM AWAY FROM ME!!!! AND I"M PAINTING AGAIN!!! HAVEN"T DONE THAT SINCE COLLEGE!!!!
Oh, my neuro knows. I want him to know. What if it helps? What if it doesn't? At least they'll be a record of it. I think thats a step toward helping uncover the truth of marajuana. Melissa D
The herb certainly helps some of us. Thousands of years of trials and testing affirm this. If the government and the foundations would support research and stop lying about the issue we would be free to use a low cost alternative to expensive pharmaceuticals. We don't have the lobby power or free $$$ speech to help ourselves. As an adjunct therapy marijuana reduces the amount of pharmaceuticals needed for some patients and less is better. I've come out of the closet since my alleged 'grow' was discovered. Doing without has been uncomfortable and unhealthy. My dosages were upped and I worry about the next seizure constantly. You know how anxiety can rule your life. Then there's the legal weight hanging over my head. I may become a felon for privately dealing with my epilepsy.
I posted this at the end of last November as a response to another response to this topic, but as there have been more responses since then I'd like to re-post in hopes that more people will see it and get more feedback.

My story:
I was diagnosed at eighteen (I'll be twenty in January) with nocturnal epilepsy after my second witnessed seizure in September 2006. My first was in April 2005. Both of these events also happened during REM, usually towards the end of the sleep cycle. I would remain unconcious for a period of time following the convulsion stage, and once I came to I'd be disoriented and unable to do much of anything. Along with this I would also suffer from severe migraines and nausea for six or seven hours after waking. After the seizures my medical history was examined, and the migraines that I've had since I was five years old made it all clear. I had been dealing with sleep seizures for over fifteen years without even knowing it. I started taking Lamictal in October 2006 and I've been smoking marijuana regularly for about two years now. I cannot say that I've seen any specific effects of the marijuana, especially since I'm also taking the AED, but I haven't suffered from a migraine since my last seizure, over a year ago. My neuro, while he couldn't tell me to smoke, implied that it does in fact, more often than not, have a positive effect on people who have seizures. Marijuana slows the electrical activity in the brain, seizures are caused by increased electrical activity. Make sense? I've been thrilled to be rid of the migraines and to finally have an answer to what was thought of as an impossible question.
And now, for those of you with your "marijuana kills" stories, take this into consideration: not everyone who uses is a moron, and just because we use doesn't mean we ABUSE. We don't all smoke and drive, have unprotected sex, or get wasted. Just because there's evidence of people doing these things doesn't mean that everyone who smokes weed does them. Ignorance won't get you anywhere, and for a little more information, read this--
Marijuana Does Not Raise Lung Cancer Risk
Tuesday , May 23, 2006
By Salynn Boyles
People who smoke marijuana do not appear to be at increased risk for developing lung cancer, new research suggests. While a clear increase in cancer risk was seen among cigarette smokers in the study, no such association was seen for regular cannabis users. Even very heavy, long-term marijuana users who had smoked more than 22,000 joints over a lifetime seemed to have no greater risk than infrequent marijuana users or nonusers. The findings surprised the study’s researchers, who expected to see an increase in cancer among people who smoked marijuana regularly in their youth. “We know that there are as many or more carcinogens and co-carcinogens in marijuana smoke as in cigarettes,” researcher Donald Tashkin, MD, of UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine tells WebMD. “But we did not find any evidence for an increase in cancer risk for even heavy marijuana smoking.” Carcinogens are substances that cause cancer. Tashkin presented the findings today at The American Thoracic Society’s 102nd International Conference, held in San Diego. Boomers Reaching Cancer Age: The study population was limited to people who were younger than 60 because people older than that would probably not have used marijuana in their teens and early adult years. “People who may have smoked marijuana in their youth are just now getting to the age when cancers are being seen,” Tashkin says. A total of 611 lung cancer patients living in Los Angeles County, and 601 patients with other cancers of the head and neck were compared with 1,040 people without cancer matched for age, sex, and the neighborhood they lived in. All the participants were asked about lifetime use of marijuana, tobacco, and alcohol, as well as other drugs, their diets, occupation, family history of lung cancer, and socioeconomic status. The heaviest marijuana users in the study had smoked more than 22,000 joints, while moderately heavy smokers had smoked between 11,000 and 22,000 joints. While two-pack-a-day or more cigarette smokers were found to have a 20-fold increase in lung cancer risk, no elevation in risk was seen for even the very heaviest marijuana smokers. The more tobacco a person smoked, the greater their risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers of the head and neck. But people who smoked more marijuana were not at increased risk compared with people who smoked less and people who didn’t smoke at all. The THC Connection: Studies suggest that marijuana smoke contains 50 percent higher concentrations of chemicals linked to lung cancer than cigarette smoke. Marijuana smokers also tend to inhale deeper than cigarette smokers and hold the inhaled smoke in their lungs longer. So why isn’t smoking marijuana as dangerous as smoking cigarettes in terms of cancer risk? The answer isn’t clear, but the experts say it might have something to do with tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, which is a chemical found in marijuana smoke. Cellular studies and even some studies in animal models suggest that THC has antitumor properties, either by encouraging the death of genetically damaged cells that can become cancerous or by restricting the development of the blood supply that feeds tumors, Tashkin tells WebMD. In a review of the research published last fall, University of Colorado molecular biologist Robert Melamede, PhD, concluded that the THC in cannabis seems to lessen the tumor-promoting properties of marijuana smoke. The nicotine in tobacco has been shown to inhibit the destruction of cancer-causing cells, Melamede tells WebMD. THC does not appear to do this and may even do the opposite. While there was a suggestion in the newly reported study that smoking marijuana is weakly protective against lung cancer, Tashkin says the very weak association was probably due to chance. Cancer risk among cigarette smokers was not influenced by whether or not they also smoked marijuana. “We saw no interaction between marijuana and tobacco, and we certainly would not recommend that people smoke marijuana to protect themselves against cancer,” he says.

Note that it was written, commented on, and reviewed by MD's. Along with these facts, I agree with Ritchie...don't preach unless you have specific experience with the situation.
And please, don't make any comments about my being naive because I'm still young. I may still be a college student but I'm not stupid. Condescension will only prove your immaturity, not mine.
I just found out I have epilepsy and I am freaked out. However, your case seems nearly identical to mine and your life seems ok, which gives me some hope. I would like to hear more about your situation. Here is mine:
I am 24 years old. I had been taking a lot of valium/ xanax/ klonopin from April of 2007 until Dec 30 of 2007. I also drank a lot, smoked a lot of week, and took Soma and Oxycodone and Vicodin. I ran out of my perscriptions for Soma/Oxy/Vic in Nov, which was not too hard to stop. On Dec 30 I took my last dose of Klonopin and quit cold turkey, as I did not like the side effects. 13 days later I had my first seizure (at least to my knowledge) where I woke up twenty feet from my bed and bleeding all over the floor from cracking my head on a table. I underwent an EEG in late Feb, and was just diagnosed as epileptic about 2 weeks ago. I have not smoked since I was officially diagnosed. I have drank heavily once since then, and I did have a seizure that night. I do not know if it is correlation or coincidence.
I was perscribed Lamictal and I take it regularly now, for about the last 2 weeks. I have also altered my diet to nearly total vegetarian and I am taking a supposed miracle working supplement called Mangosteen for the last 12 days.
I am going to smoke pot tonite as an experiment. I am relieved to see positive effects on most people here, and I am very relieved to hear that it decreases electrical activity in the brain. That is whyI am doing tonites experiment.
----- Result: I smoked and did not have a seizure. Very encouraging.
------ I smoked the following night and did not have a seizure. Excellent.
Sorry to hear that you now have seizures. It's important for people to know, however, that many 'recreational' and illicit drugs, as well as inappropriate use of prescribed drugs like pain killers can precipitate seizures and lead to damage in the brain, resulting in chronic seizures or epilepsy in some people. Additionally, suddenly stopping some medications can cause acute seizures. Excessive use of alcohol can aggravate seizures, and long-term can be a cause of damage to the brain as well.
When a person has all these factors going on at once, it may be hard to sort out the exact cause and tests and close medical follow-up will be needed to sort it out. Staying away from the substances that may cause or affect seizures in any way would be critical.
It's important for everyone with seizures to talk to their doctors about how alcohol, and any substance may affect their seizures so you can know how to take care of yourself and prevent seizures from occurring, or at least help yourself to get better control. Remember, it's your life and you are in charge!

Hi, i was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, with a front temporal lobe disorder, i live in Texas where medicinal marijuana is not even a thought and all the doctors are very closed minded as to the possibility of it having medicinal value, i started smoking marijuana when i was 13 years old, living in Washington state, i had had some previous epileptic events that i had never seen a doctor for, but as soon as i smoked, all my symptoms of seizure activity vanished.... for 5 years i didn't even have a twitch hardly, then i decided to quit smoking, within 2 weeks i had a massive grand maul seizure, after which i was very nausiated and threw up, my friend who wittnessed the seizure had me smoke some pot, which was of high quality and i almost automaticlly felt somewhat better, things were still fuzzy and staticky in my head but i didn't have another seizure once i started smoking again.. About a year ago I moved to Texas, i was caught with a small amount of marijuana in my car and was put on a years probation about 3 months ago, being put into a situation where i cannot smoke it, since then I had a massive series of seizures which almost killed me.. I went to several neurologists who thought that my seizures were pseudo seizures (meaning that i didnt suffer from seizures at all) then about one month ago i did a video monitered EEG which showed quite alot of strange activity going on in my right front temporal lobe suggesting epilepsy. None of the doctors which ive spoken to have even began to acknowledge marijuana's anti- convulsant properties which have been known for thousands of years. I know my body, i can feel the seizures start, and now i know that i had that feeling many times before and i would just light up and it would go away. now that i cant for the next ten months ive been put on tegretol, which has had some horrific side affects to my mind and my sex life, I wish that neurologists and doctors in general would open up they're minds to at least the possibility that THC does work when it comes to treating epilepsy, I am still having seizures and there doesn't seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel aside from the end of my probation, in 10 months... just thought id put in my opinion on this highly debated topic.. --Aaron--age 24.
There are many ex marijuana smokers registered in a drug rehab in california (http://www.drugrehab.net/faq.php ) and some of them even have epilepsy. Many of those suffering from this condition have declared that smoking marijuana not only ma de them feel sick but started their ceisures.
Hi not really sure If I am in the right bit here as I am new but about 2 years ago I was diagnosed with Grand Mal seizures or tonic Clonic as they are also known by and I have been smoking weed for 14 years and a lot of people have blamed my long term use on it but to me thats crud as in all my tests it shows I was not born with it I have no damage to my brain or scarring to bring this on, is there any one out there who is the same or knows of any one the same, as I have been told because my epilepsy is unknown and uncontrolled (even though the epilipm and weed help)I will be on meds for the rest of my life, please help im a sick of this tag stuck to me.
i was reading the posts here and thought id throw in my 2 cents worth.i have a friend that has a teen with seizures that have only gotten worse with age.about a year ago this teen almost passed away from so many seizures.they had tried all drugs and this kid wasnt a candidate for surgery.about 2 weeks after the teen almost passing and the doctors not sure what to do next, the mother contacted their nursing team and asked about marijuana.the answer they gave was "did he/she try it did it help?" to which the answer was no not yet they wanted doctor approvale first.well then the parents gave the teen a little to smoke well the next day i was over visiting this teen and my gosh the teen was well rested goofing off just like all teens should be i asked why? what happened 2 weeks before i was at the hospital wondereing if i was going to see this teen again...the answer was the marijuana it had been months and months since the kid had had one night seizure free and that night they gave the teen the weed well there was no seizures at all!!! they are not using it right now because the doctors have come up with one thing last to try.but i know my friend will give their teen it again if some control is not achieved again.the only down fall to the whole event was the teen not being to thrilled about the initial "high" and having really bad "munchies".currently they are looking at pot cookies or something along those lines.anyways thats all i have to say,i have seen positive results from marijuana, but it is all about the individual and how much it helps them.
good luck to all of you its all about quality of life
I also smoke to help control my seizures and pain; I have a bad neck caused from seizures!
I was born with epilepsy, I started smoking pot when I was about 11 to help cope with the
monster "epilepsy"! I quit smoking for 11 yrs. to raise my son and started back up about
8 yrs. ago and I've had no problems with pot and my seizures. I also fully agree that
marijuana should become legalized for those of us whom do require it, not just for grins.
I've been smoking marijuana since 1970, with no lung or heart problems, and only one seizure since Judge Patrick Sheppard's decision
Dec. 10,1997. declaring our marijuana laws unconstitutional here in Canada. This was appealed, and on July 31,2000, the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld Justice Sheppard's decision, making marijuana legal in Canada. Since this decision, many cases have been thrown out of court, when prohibition of marijuana is un-known at law, since the Parker decision was not appealed, and the Canadian government, has not re-enacted criminal code statue upon marijuana.
As the plaintiff of this constitutional decision, I had to demonstrate that I have exhausted all legal remedies, whereas the court heard, despite thousands of milgrams of Dilantin, Mysoline, Tegretol, Valproric Acid, Librium, Valuim, and two unauthorized left
and double right, temporal lobectomies, with the trespass of metallic implants in the cerebral cortex, this treatment made my epilepsy worst. Marijuana is much more effective, without the fear of a prodrome or seizure.
I'm still asking myself, why do I have a 43 unauthorized metallic implants in the cerebral cortex. I'm learning, that when a unauthorized procedure such as psychosurgical and brain implant research is imposed upon a unwitting subject, this correlates with the CIA MK-ULTRA project of "psychosurgical and "brain implant" research upon unwitting subjects.
Those subjects being myself, and other children who suffer epilepsy, at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, and God knows how many
other hospitals across Canada.
As a society, when we can sit back and ignore unauthorized non-therapeutic manchurian candidate developmental research upon those who suffer epilepsy, then there should be no problem to sit back and ignore marijuana, which is by far the lesser evil as to block seizure disorder.
A joint in front of me, is better than a unauthorized lobotomy.
Yours,
Terry Parker Jr./ aka Robertson

Hi Terry It's an honor to have you post here. I read your plight years ago on the web. My heart went out to you. I too use MJ to control my sezuires and it has done very well for me. Thank you for your courage and your action to help others. God bless you. x
i have decided to quit smoking weed because i feel more addicted to it then as a benefit to my life. and since it is not available to me all the time i always went through stages of running out. i will let you know what has happened with my health after more than a few months of sobriety.
the changes have only been for a week and am scared i will not stay on the good path. i have stopped marijuana which i did about 3 times a day and cigarettes (about half a pack daily). sadly i am doing this more to show how effective they were so my family would accept it.
it was the happiest thing in my life.
i have had epilepsy for 23 years (since i was 3). i smoke marijuana on a regular basis. i started when i was about 12 and have kept smoking because it does help. when i smoke a joint a day i only have to take about 600mg a day. when i don't smoke i require at least 900mgs of the dilantin. when i smoke it really helps, because the more dilantin that i take, the more it injures the lining of my stomach. but i can normally feel in my nerves about how much i am going to need that night. So by smoking marijuana, I improve my over all health. I was going to ask if there is a way that i could help my epilepsy threw legal channels?

Rapper, find something else to help with your stomach problems. Please read the article below and keep in mind the dangers are much greater for someone like yourself with epilepsy.
Marijuana Dangers
Marijuana has many dangers; through both immediate effects and damage to health over time.
Marijuana hinders the user's short-term memory (memory for recent events), and he or she may have trouble handling complex tasks. With the use of more potent varieties of marijuana, even simple tasks can be difficult.
Because of the drug's effects on perceptions and reaction time, users could be involved in auto crashes. Drug users also may become involved in risky sexual behavior. There is a strong link between drug use and unsafe sex and the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Under the influence of marijuana, students may find it hard to study and learn. Young athletes could find their performance is off; timing, movements, and coordination are all affected by THC.
Marijuana affects many skills required for safe driving: alertness, the ability to concentrate, coordination, and reaction time. These effects can last up to 24 hours after smoking marijuana. Marijuana use can make it difficult to judge distances and react to signals and sounds on the road.
There is data showing that marijuana can play a role in crashes. When users combine marijuana with alcohol, as they often do, the hazards of driving can be more severe than with either drug alone.
A study of patients in a shock-trauma unit who had been in traffic accidents revealed that 15 percent of those who had been driving a car or motorcycle had been smoking marijuana, and another 17 percent had both THC and alcohol in their blood.
In one study conducted in Memphis, TN, researchers found that, of 150 reckless drivers who were tested for drugs at the arrest scene, 33 percent tested positive for marijuana, and 12 percent tested positive for both marijuana and cocaine. Data also show that while smoking marijuana, people show the same lack of coordination on standard "drunk driver" tests as do people who have had too much to drink.
Smoking any drug is unhealthy. Marijuana is no exception. The smoke actually contains higher concentrations of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than tobacco smoke. Marijuana smokers generally inhale more smoke for longer depositing more than 4 times as much tar on their lungs as cigarette smokers.
Worse is if you combine marijuana and tobacco. If you are a heavy smoker of marijuana and tobacco joints (more than 10 a day) you are significantly increasing your risk of contracting lung disease. Recent studies show that the greatest pre-cancerous abnormalities appear in those who smoke the two drugs together.
A common side-effect, usually for first time or early users, is anxiety, panic, paranoia and feelings of impending doom. In a recent study, between 10%-15% of people who smoked marijuana reported "paranoid" or "confused" feelings as a disadvantage of smoking marijuana. And over 27% reported "anxiety" as a regular or occasional effect. Around 30% gave "negative experiences" as their reason for permanently quitting marijuana.
Effects on the Brain
Scientists have learned a great deal about how THC acts in the brain to produce its many effects. When someone smokes marijuana, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to organs throughout the body, including the brain.
In the brain, THC connects to specific sites called cannabinoid receptors on nerve cells and influences the activity of those cells. Some brain areas have many cannabinoid receptors; others have few or none. Many cannabinoid receptors are found in the parts of the brain that influence pleasure, memory, thought, concentration, sensory and time perception, and coordinated movement.
The short-term effects of marijuana use can include problems with memory and learning; distorted perception; difficulty in thinking and problem solving; loss of coordination; and increased heart rate. Research findings for long-term marijuana use indicate some changes in the brain similar to those seen after long-term use of other major drugs of abuse. For example, cannabinoid (THC or synthetic forms of THC) withdrawal in chronically exposed animals leads to an increase in the activation of the stress-response system and changes in the activity of nerve cells containing dopamine. Dopamine neurons are involved in the regulation of motivation and reward, and are directly or indirectly affected by all drugs of abuse.
Effects on the Heart
One study has indicated that a user’s risk of heart attack more than quadruples in the first hour after smoking marijuana. The researchers suggest that such an effect might occur from marijuana’s effects on blood pressure and heart rate and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.
Effects on the Lungs
A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers. Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses.
Even infrequent use can cause burning and stinging of the mouth and throat, often accompanied by a heavy cough. Someone who smokes marijuana regularly may have many of the same respiratory problems that tobacco smokers do, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, a heightened risk of lung infections, and a greater tendency to obstructed airways.
Cancer of the respiratory tract and lungs may also be promoted by marijuana smoke. A study comparing 173 cancer patients and 176 healthy individuals produced strong evidence that smoking marijuana increases the likelihood of developing cancer of the head or neck, and the more marijuana smoked the greater the increase. A statistical analysis of the data suggested that marijuana smoking doubled or tripled the risk of these cancers.
Marijuana use has the potential to promote cancer of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory tract because it contains irritants and carcinogens. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than does tobacco smoke. It also produces high levels of an enzyme that converts certain hydrocarbons into their carcinogenic form—levels that may accelerate the changes that ultimately produce malignant cells. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which increases the lungs’ exposure to carcinogenic smoke. These facts suggest that, puff for puff, smoking marijuana may increase the risk of cancer more than smoking tobacco.
Other Health Effects
Some of marijuana's adverse health effects may occur because THC impairs the immune system’s ability to fight off infectious diseases and cancer. In laboratory experiments that exposed animal and human cells to THC or other marijuana ingredients, the normal disease-preventing reactions of many of the key types of immune cells were inhibited. In other studies, mice exposed to THC or related substances were more likely than unexposed mice to develop bacterial infections and tumors.
Effects of Heavy Marijuana Use on Learning and Social Behavior
Depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances are all associated with marijuana use. Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana use has potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person’s existing problems worse. Because marijuana compromises the ability to learn and remember information, the more a person uses marijuana the more he or she is likely to fall behind in accumulating intellectual, job, or social skills. Moreover, research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on memory and learning can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.
Students who smoke marijuana get lower grades and are less likely to graduate from high school, compared to their non-smoking peers. In one study, researchers compared marijuana-smoking and non-smoking 12th-graders’ scores on standardized tests of verbal and mathematical skills. Although all of the students had scored equally well in 4th grade, the marijuana smokers’ scores were significantly lower in 12th grade.
A study of 129 college students found that, for heavy users of marijuana (those who smoked the drug at least 27 of the preceding 30 days), critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning were significantly impaired even after they had not used the drug for at least 24 hours. The heavy marijuana users in the study had more trouble sustaining and shifting their attention and in registering, organizing, and using information than did the study participants who had used marijuana no more than 3 of the previous 30 days. As a result, someone who smokes marijuana once daily may be functioning at a reduced intellectual level all of the time.
More recently, the same researchers showed that the ability of a group of long-term heavy marijuana users to recall words from a list remained impaired f
