I had food allergy testing as a kid and found a list of things I was allergic too. Seeds, nuts, seafood, the one that surprised us was Dairy aka Milk products I had always consumed them and had no severe reaction maybe stomach upset if anything. So who wants to give up all milk products! Its in everything! So I kept having it. But when I had my first seizures at the age of 9 I was put on meds to treat them and for my whole life I have had break through seizures. I never understood why. And i was dismissed growing up as a child afraid of her epilepsy.
When I met my husband we started dating in highschool around 17 I told him about everything he put two and two together he said your break through seizures get worse when you have MILK.
I'm like No they dont. He said I have been watching for months Michelle THEY DO. So I stopped Milk products and the seizures went away.
Yep my allegy to milk finally figured out what it did. Gave me flipping SEIZURES! So I am right there with you all Allergies absolutley can cause seizures. When i told my nerologist he thought that was a cooky idea. but said whatever people are different. But i did some research and found any stress on the body can cause seizures and food allergies is stress on the body of course seizures would be associated it makes sense. WHy they dont do further studies is beyond me.
Now that I am on 2 seizure meds. I can get away with having milk. the 2 meds control it. But still if I go to into access. I still have problems.
So again I am a strong believer in Food alergies or alergies in general or linked with seizures.
I had my 1st seizure at 15 months old from a high fever when I had salmonella I had gotten from chicken. This made me vulnerable to seizures. When I got to be 5 years old I was a picky eater. I had discovered peanut butter when I started school and fell in love. (Long story, has to do with being raised by my grandmother, she never had peanut butter in the house when I was little) I only would eat peanut butter. And that would be the only way to get me to eat anything. And I started to have seizures. I was very lucky to be raised by my then 70 year old grandmother. She had the wisdom to be able to question my condition. And the knowledge to draw upon to make a valid theory. She decided to take peanuts out of my diet and my seizures stopped. Then she gave me peanuts and I almost instantly had a seizure. She told the doctor and I remember him laughing at her. My grandfather even laughed at her. I was so young and really loved peanut butter and my grandfather gave me a pb&j sandwich one day and I had a seizure and ended up at the ER with my head wide open and my grandfather crying and telling me I would never again have peanuts in my life that it was truly what causes my seizures and he was sorry for what he had done. I still did not listen. I was seizure free for several years then one day my grandmother put the wrong sandwich in the wrong lunch box and sure enough as any 8 year old would do I ATE THAT PB& J! Guess what happen to me next! I became a believer in my grandmother. I have a food allergy that will induce a seizure. I have been laughed at by numerous doctors over the years that say peanuts can not do that. But they can for me. Don’t get me wrong, they are not the only way I can have a seizure. Stress will place me in a seizure in a blink of an eye, literally. I was seizure free from 8 years old till 17 years old. I had a mild seizure the night before I called of my engagement. (Stress). I had a seizure at 19 years old the day my son was born. He was born with club feet and the doctor walked in and said your son will never walk and I immediately went into a seizure before he could finish his sentence if I didn’t have surgery on his foot. (Stress). And now at 32 years old I had a seizure from being on anti depressants that I should have never been on in the first place. And by the way peanuts are legumes not a nut which means I am not allergic to cashews or other nuts.
My 2 yr old daughter is severly allergic to fire ants, and was started on Allergy shots. About a month into the allergy shots she started having very small reactions to the shots, just a little swelling and itching. Then one Monday she got her shot and developed a slight fever. Later that night after putting her to bed she had a seizure. I have asked her allergist and her neurologist and have been told there was no connection, but I don't believe it. By reading some of the posts on here I am beginning to think she had an allergic reaction to the shot that day which brought on seizures. I am really trying to connect the 2 and have spent hour upon hour upon hour researching this, So now I am wondering if anyone knows anything about this or has had the same experience.
I have a two part answer depending on your question. My son who has epilepsy (he's 8) has major allergies. They are not to the medication but they do cause a threat to the epilepsy as if his allergies are out of control and exhausting him then it can bring on a seizure as sleep is so important for one who has seizures.I hope that is answering your question.Diane
Oh I'm glad I found this section! Cuz I've got some questions too!I suffer from really bad hayfever around the July-August months.I RARELY take any allergy meds, because I usually let it run it's course.I have not been diagnosed with epilepsy as yet, but I did have my first grand-mal seizure on 07/26. The doctor says I have a rare congenital condition called Periventricular Heterotopia.Periventricular Heterotopia is caused when the ventricals deep inside the brain (the sacs of fluid way behind your sinuses) aren't formed properly and the neurons do not clump together during the development of the fetus. Thus, my being born prematurely. The fact that it's "behind the sinuses" kinda bothers me, because I don't know if I'm harming myself by NOT taking any allergy medication to alleviate the stuffiness in my sinuses (oh and I've heard about Benadryl and I don't go near it!) or if I AM harming myself by taking allergy meds (i.e., half a Reactine in the morning, and then the other half in the evening if needed). So I kinda just ride it out if I can, and take allergy meds if I *absolutely* have to....
A doctor put me on Lithium for depression and that made me
seize 6 weeks ago so be careful about that, I am not longer
on that, they pulled me off all meds I was on and raised my
lamictal for my depression med and also I am allergic to
Benedryl and Dialantin, that causes high fevers in me. I am
allergic to sulfa drugs in certain things, Icant take ceptra
but the pharmacy told me zonegran (my seizure med) is part of a sulfa
drug and I dont have problems with that so I dont know why that is.
But Grapefruit Juice is a no no I know with some seizure meds
and mine is one of them (zonegran), I was reading that one glass
of grapefruit juice with zonegran can delete the med and stay in
your system up to a week, just one glass so be careful of that and
check your med for that.
Take care
Ann
I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I have been triggered by allergic reactions. I have severe food allergies to shellfish & butter (milk protein allergy that is fairly mild except when it comes to butter, then it is anaphylactic). I noticed several years ago that an allergic reaction tended to trigger a seizure. I don't have reactions often anymore, but every now and then I'll be in the same area as cooking lobster or eat something at a restaurant that was cooked near shellfish.
i think i do know what you mean. although i have allergys to a lot of meds that is not what you are getting at . i used to love fish before i was diagnosed with E, but as my E got worse i found i was getting a strange reaction to fish . when i ate it i could feel myself getting faint and "strange" but blamed the red wine i was enjoying with it anyway i loved fish so much i ignored these problems. anyway my E was diagnosed and i was having so many seizures i never really connected that the fish could be a problem.but it had got to the point it was happening every time and to my astonishment even when someone beside me ate it i asked my neuro and he said he'd never heard of food being a trigger and it was me just being nervious but i do believe that fish brings on a seizure in my case.and yes i now am very werry of fish and even eating out as i take enough of these nasty things without adding to them. Ruth
Hi ruth. Would you please tell me more about your theory on food allergies and seizures. I have a feeling that my seven year old son has seizures triggered by food.
I am interested in food alergies and seizure. I know that raw sugar tends to send me into seizure as does any stimulant. Having E , my neurons are naturally easily excited. I love to munch on Chocolate. But because of the sugar and caffine in it I most times suffer a seizure from it. So I try and avoid the yummy stuff. It's a shame too becuase I enjoy chocolate and sugary sweet treats. Certain foods are good to eat to help ward off seizures. Brocolli is one green food that helps reduce seizure. I am going to surf the web today to see what I can find out about food allergies and seizure. I'll let you'all know what I find. Anything to help stop the twitching and other unpleasantries that go with E is good. Every little little tip is helpful. Thanks. Linda
After I figured out that caffeine caused an increase in seizure activity, I asked the school to not allow Brandon to get chocolate milk at lunch (I explained why). I get a note back from the teacher, saying that the school dietition told her there wasn't any caffeine in chocolate milk. I just knew something about chocolate increased his activity, so I looked into the chemical makeup. AHA! Not caffeine, but theobromine - caffeine's 'cousin'. Same effects. Neurologist confirmed this was probably indeed the culprit. By the way, neuro also tells me that white chocolate has neither caffeine or theobromine, so that may be a consolation to some degree. Just remember, anything that ends in "ine", either stimulates or suppresses the CNS, and can cause an increase in activity for some. (A good example: Benadryl, a/k/a diphenhydramine. My kid has "seizure-palooza" after a single benadryl.)
Oh Leah! I can't tell you how useful your post has been to me. I've had epilepsy for about a year now and have been able to drink coffee, tea, whatever like a crazy person. But out of the blue, for no apparent reason, one day I just woke up and couldn't tolerate one sip of coffee or more than five bites of chocolate without having my pupils dilate all big and scary and my heart beat crazy fast! This has been going on for almost two weeks now and I'll be seeing my neuro about it at the end of the month - but to hear that I might at least be able to have white choccie has made my day. ;-) The thought of him not being able to alter my meds or something and me having to never taste chocolate or Coke again... or to live on just teeny sips and the odd sliver is just too depressing.
Since my first seizure a year and a half ago I can no longer eat peanuts. I get violently ill and have partial seizures. This has been hard to get used to since I adored PB&J sandwiches until then. My Dr. said he dosen't hear of too offten but it can happen.
Maybe it isn't the allergies that are causing the seizures. Maybe an allergic reaction causes immune systems to be compromised triggering a seizure? Maybe this explains menstrual cycle seizures? I know that Doctors do not go along with the theory that menstrual cycles compromise immune systems but if you ask any woman she will let you know that it is far easier to catch a cold or flu or develop cold sores just before menstruation.Does anyone out there with E know if their Immune systems are chronically lowered?
Interesting about the peanuts and seizure. I don't eat nuts that often but will watch next time I do and see if I have seizure. In regards to a weakend immune system and seizure I think you are on to something. What happens to a child or adult when they have a fever or are sick and have E? They have seizure right. You don't have a fever unless there is a breakdown in your immune system. Even for a child or adult who doesn't have E, a high fever can cause a first time seizure. I was not aware of a weakend immune system and relation to a womans menses. This is all very interesting to examine. Becuase stress too brings on seizure. If a person is in distress of anykind be it physical or mental then they are prone to seizure. With either type of stress the immune system is weakened. Could it be that a weakend immune system is a common factor found in association with seizure? These are just my thoughts. Linda
I do agree ref. peanut and sometimes other type of dried fruit, my son who is having now 5.5 years old is diagnosed E. I have experienced that whilst he takes nuts and some times egg his seizure is triggered badly. Finally i found any food that drives the body to constipation it helps triggre. Ice cream does too, ice cream controls the muscles and this causes constipation and sore throat and finally trigger.ALI
I think any medication, seizure or otherwise, can compromise your immune system. I don't know that allergic reactions cause seizures, but my doctor told me not to take benadryl as it could trigger a seizure. I am allergic to dairy and pollen. I have a lot of sinus problems. I started acupuncture this year, and it has made a world of difference in my allergies.
I just had my second seizure in my life about 3 weeks ago, on 26-Aug-2005. My first seizure was on 18-Dec-2004. My seizures are tonic-clonic. Yesterday I felt like crap all day, and about 4:30 pm I had a pretty bad aura. I immediately took some Trileptal and Ativan and didn't have a seizure, but I can't think of what would have triggered even an aura except I had taken Benadryl the night before.
I think I'm going to lay off the Benadryl and stick to Claritin. I have lots of sinus problems too. Sometimes it seems like Benadryl is the only thing that will stop the sniffles. I'm not sure what is worse, taking Benadryl (and risking a seizure) or taking more than the recommended dose of Claritin. I guess I will have to talk to my doctor about that.
Thanks for the tip on benadryl. I have taken it before, didn't know it could cause seizure. Had the accupuncture before but not specifically for seizure. Bet it probably helps in controlling seizure though. Had acupuncture done to help tendonitis in my elbow. After three treatments the elbow pain was much relieved. Have had acupunture to help stop migraine head aches and had the same successful results. I think it probably would help control seizure too. Linda
On April 11, 2007 my 7 year old son began having seizures. I started to keep track of what he ate, what he did, how much sleep he got etc. The last seizure he had was on 9/13/07 while he was at school. I started to notice that he had them whenever he had red spaghetti/pizza sauce, whether it be at school on the pizza they serve or from our local italian restaurant or from the jar. He has been on Depakote since the end of April 2007. This drug has definitely changed the personality of my son and he is not the little boy he once was. I have brought up several times to the neurologist about the fact that something was telling me this may be a food allergy triggering the seizure and she basically shook her head and said no. He has had an MRI of the brain and an EEG which have come back normal. I so want my son to be back to the normal boy he once was. Does anyone have any thoughts or information they could share?
From reading these posts I think we should all be tested for allergies and your son definitely. Especially as you have wrote down a food diary, perhaps try another neuro for a seconf opinion. I wonder if its the sauce or pasta / pizza base causing it? I have read lots about avoiding processed foods, and am considering trying the low gi diet as I have read this can help reduce seizures in some as can gluten free. Have ordered some books from amazon. The comments on refined carbs are interesting below. As for the meds, they do affect us even though you don't always realsie how much at the time. I have just come off meds 3 months ago (personal choice) and now everyones telling me I have my sparkle back, not that anyone dared to tell me at the time that I had lost it! I hope you find the answers for your son. Best wishes Bex
I'm allergic to like 4 different meds.I'm allergic to pollen, anything that sheds except man.But that doesn't cause my seizures.Anything can bring on a seizure with me.I have an appointment see my allergy doctor tomorrow. Belinda
doks,I get weekly allergy shots, cause I'm allergic to everything green except for cash!..lol I don't know what you mean by interferring with EP. I do know that coughing tends to be a trigger for some of my seizures.classy
i'm allergic to bee stings, wasp stings, those sort of things and i am inquiring about an epi-pen because i don't always remember to have a couple of tiny little benadryls that i was told to carry with me when i had my first allergic reaction to a bee sting..my right arm was twice the size of the left one and i had dizziness and caught myself from fainting so it was a bad one..this was back in my freshman year of high school and i turn 23 tomorrow. haven't been diagnosed with epilepsy yet but i am curious to know..can an allergic reaction to a bee sting cause a seizure..? i would think yes but i don't know 4 sure
as far as meds are concerned, i am allergic to Keflex and when the ragweed and pollen count are up, i feel absolutely horrible. i have sinus problems all the time also.
I have been living with seizures for 25 years without a definite diagnosis because my eeg's never indicated any cause for them. However, after 2 gran mal seizures in the summer of 2001, I was put on Keppra. But the weird thing was that the small, quick episodes I was having were still occurring. Last April (2006) I was referred to an Ears, Nose & Throat specialist after recurring sinus infections. I was tested for allergies and discovered among a few environmental things that I was allergic to 6 foods (rice, beef, fresh garlic, fresh tomatoes, yeast, and shellfish - there goes my favorite Italian foods) and that I should not have any combination of them within 2-3 days of each other. I asked what the reaction would be and the Dr. said he didn't know. I would have to eliminate them from my diet and introduce one at a time, etc. In June I did some research and found that my theory may not be without merit. I also found a site that said that soft white bread was a common trigger for seizures. I finally decided to try it. IT WORKED!!! I have been free of them and I have my life back! I saw both my primary care Dr. and neurologist and have been taken off the Keppra without incident. I mentioned it today to my ENT and he said he had never heard of such a thing. I really believe this should be publicized and anyone experiencing any type of migraine or seizure (without a documented diagnosis) should be tested for allergies. Hey, you never know! The more research I do, the more information I find that supports this theory.
