I went to the pharmacy to get my prescription of Lamictal filled on Saturday....this is now Wednesday. They gave me the generic brand of it. I decided to give it a try. Just last week I had to call my GP to get some pills to help me sleep. But since Ive been on the generic brand of lamictal I have had no trouble sleeping at all. I want to sleep ALL THE TIME! Since being on the generic brand, I am sooo tired all the time now, I feel really sluggish and foggy headed and just dont feel right at all. I had to call the pharmacy today and talk to them about it. He told me that basically the generic brand is the same as Name brand. BUT....there are added inactive ingredients that can cause other side effects. Like fatiuge! My pharmacist told me to call my doc and let them know. I called them and they called my ins company and had to have the orders overridden to where I can only have the Name Brand! Has anyone else had side effects after switching to generic Lamictal??

Sometimes when switching to a generic medication it can bring about changes in seizure control as well as side effects. From what it sounds like, the generic medication may not be metabilizing at the same rate as the name brand Lamictal did. If you regularly get levels drawn for Lamictal, I would ask your physician if he/she would recommend you doing so after you're stablilzed on this new medication. A simple reduction in the medication may help to bring about relief, however, don't decrease your medication without consulting your physician.
Second, if you decide to stay on the generic, I would strongly advise you to stay with the same manufacturer, since all manufacturer's composition may be different. The FDA requires the amount of the active ingredient to be within certain bounds but the inactive ingredients can cause the way it metabolizes in your body to be different. Sometimes pharmacies will switch to another manufacturer so make sure you request that they do not change it. I've had that problem with my daughter's medication and now the pharmacy makes sure they always give me the medication from the same company.
Good Luck!

I consulted my Epi doc and they had it authorized through my insurance company to have me switched back to regular lamictal. I can already see the difference now. I am so glad to be back on my meds. last night I had an episode, im not exactly sure what it was. I dont remember giving my children their medicine or braiding my daughters hair. I dont even remember going to bed at all. It was weird. But when I woke up I didnt feel like I had had a seizure in my sleep or anything. So.....Im just glad to be back on my regular meds.
