Witnessing a Seizure

When you witness a seizure, especially for the first time, it can be frightening and may evoke feelings of helplessness. If the person having the seizure is someone you love or care for deeply, these feelings may be overwhelming. Unless you have been taught to recognize how persons with epilepsy behave during seizures, you may not even be sure what is happening.

Staying Calm

Each person’s reaction to witnessing a seizure will vary, however, staying calm is the most useful response for everyone. If you know what to expect, you are less likely to be afraid and give the appropriate assistance. Therefore it is extremely important for persons with epilepsy to tell those with whom they have regular contact that they have seizures, and what to do when one occurs.
